Do you need some in-person career coaching?

Hello DAP Community!

As the Winter/Spring sessions are now in full swing, I encourage you to keep your future career in focus as part of your ongoing efforts to take your newly acquired accounting education into the labour market. How you determine this, create a plan and execute your goals are just as important as the accounting classes you are spending your valuable time on!

Each student varies in where they are in the process of determining their career direction. This was validated clearly as we went through the various Orientation sessions over the past few months. When asked the question, “Do you know where you are going to take your accounting career?” The consistent response of about 3% was very telling. Then when inquiring with students about what their plans were to research and approach the labour market, the percentage only rose slightly as the common refrain was repeated, “I am not sure how to do that?”

Well, the DAP office is committed to supporting you at this time of year with several options to help:

1. If there is enough interest to have in-person career coaching opportunities on campus to discuss your specific needs, we will schedule some and send out a notice when they will take place. All you have to do is email me and I will review the interest and respond accordingly Send any inquiries or interest to dapcareersupport@sauder.ubc.ca

2. If an in-person coaching appointment is not required but you would like to meet online. We have the technology through Blackboard, where we can meet online and discuss career related information and review any documents that you would like reviewed. Send a request for an online appointment and I will send you the information you need to be ready.

3. The DAP Office recently removed the fee for coaching. Up until 2014 it was $20 per appointment. Now coaching is provided for you at no extra cost. So, I recommend you take advantage of these opportunities as you need them!

4. The Career Workshop Series begins on January 21st and will cover the Sauder Career Success Cycle and will have many “advanced concepts” included which are not in the information offered on Connect. This will provide you with a wealth of information in an interactive environment that you can implement following each session. This will help you chart a course that will help you reach your career destination in a more successful manner. You can sign up for these sessions on COOL.

It is my pleasure to be available to you and to help you with this very important part of your career advancement and life. This is my passion!.

I hope to hear from you, or see you soon!

Sincerely,

Russell Garrett
