Join DAP career coach, Russell Garrett, for DAP’s upcoming Careers in Accounting workshop series starting September 20th. This workshop series is comprised of 7 sequential workshops that will take you through each step of the career planning process, starting on September 20th. Not sure how to get started on the accounting career path? Don’t miss this opportunity for tailored guidance and exclusive tips to start you on your way!

All of the workshops will be held in-person at 4:45 to 6:15 pm PT and as pilot project, we will be livestreaming the workshops to those who are unable to attend in-person. Registration for all 7 workshops is now open on COOL where you will have the option to select the in-person workshop or the online workshop (please make sure to only select one of the two for each workshop date).

Workshop 1 – September 20th – Career Research and Action Plan
Understanding your strengths, values and motivators is a great foundation to begin your career planning and to identify your next career goal. Discover the best ways to pursue that goal through research, information and self-evaluation which will lead you to motivation, decision and action! If your plan is not in place, if you feel stuck, or if you need to define your goal and plans better, this workshop will give you the tools and process to get you there. You will be able to review important areas including your growth mindset, emotional intelligence and your alignment with the labour market and your potential career target.

Workshop 2 – September 27th – Networking – Creating, Building & Maintaining Relationships
Networking and making meaningful contacts in the realm of business, with companies and Public Practice Firms are key to becoming known in a sea of candidates and increase your chances of landing employment. Identify ways to engage individuals to learn about your targeted industry, create relationships and secure employment. See how you can increase your success when you meet new network contacts, campus recruiting reps, managers and staff during campus events, office hours, info sessions, company events and proactive efforts.

Workshop 3 – October 4th – Online Presence & Personal Branding
Much like technology over the last 25 years, social media continues its steep trend of merging with business. Your personal branding in-person, online and on your written documents can truly impact people looking for new hires. Making the efforts to increase your brand’s impact as a consistent expression of self-marketing and good communication to employers, human resources representatives and decision makers will take your job search to another level. Prepare introductions, increase your visual impact and improve your social media presence and activity, including improving your LinkedIn profile.

Workshop 4 – October 18th – Resumes That Get Employer’s Attention
Watch your resume begin to take shape to fit the business and accounting field including Public Practice Firm Recruiting. See how your resume can stand out through formatting choices, placement of key information and incorporating industry and business terminology into your resume. Learn about the approach of turning your work, volunteer and extra-curricular experience into expressive bullets that capture results, your skills and the scope of the successes you have brought previous roles. As well, begin preparing your Reference List so its ready when an employer asks for it following an interview.

Workshop 5 – November 1st – The Power of Specific Cover Letters
Many candidates have told of sending out 50 or more applications before landing their targeted career goal. There are few things more impacting than a well written specific cover letter. When candidates move from general cover letters to specific expressions of relevant skills and company knowledge with passion and confidence, the response rate of employer’s climbs significantly. Discover how you can tailor your letters to specific companies, people and positions and bring out the best of your past to demonstrate your previous performance to help them believe you can produce results again. Create an attraction that will compel them to invite you to an interview and make you a job offer.

Workshop 6 – November 15th – Successful Interviewing
Prepare in advance so that you are ready to clearly demonstrate your skills, accomplishments and strengths in an interview and during a competitive Public Practice Firm recruiting process. Increase the effect of both your first and last impressions. Learn what types of questions will be asked and the best way to prepare and answer behavioural, open-ended, value-based, and other various challenging questions. Then learn the importance of, and determine your follow up plan for every job search activity as a way of protecting your investment.

Workshop 7 – November 29th – Navigating Job Offers, Salary & Your Future!
Learn and apply the strategies of accepting and declining job offers and how to stay connected with the companies you remain interested in while you are waiting or when you do not secure a position with them. Learn how to prepare for and initiate a salary discussion and negotiate salary when necessary. Utilize strategies to evaluate job offers and seize the best opportunities. Then as a Sauder DAP Alumni, see how you can leverage your success for your future and for others.
