This subject has been a hot topic of interest among job seekers for many years. Is this season a good time to look for work? Will employers meet and network with me? Are any companies actually looking for people? Will companies interview and hire during a time when many companies are winding down for the holiday season?
These are some of the many questions I have been asked. In fact, a few years ago I was invited to make an appearance on Breakfast Television on CityTV on this very topic. So, to answer these questions I offer the following.
Actually this season is one of the best times of the year to look for work and connect with employers/decision makers for employment and networking. Here are a few reasons why:
- Employers often have less of a workload as they see business activity lessen allowing for more time for networking and information interviews.
- Employers often get out of the office more and attend meetings and networking functions.
- People, in general, are often more generous with their time and with providing help to people needing their advice and support.
- Many companies are making business and hiring plans for the New Year and are connecting with people throughout December to meet the staffing needs of the coming year.
- Managers are often determining budgets for the New Year which may include plans for hiring.
- Any business associated with retail will have increased needs as they go through their busiest time of the year.
So, if these things are happening in the labour market, what can you do to take advantage of these opportunities?
- Get out of the house and connect with people at various networking and social events and make as many connections as you can over a glass of eggnog.
- Contact the people you are interested in and ask for an information interview.
- Send someone a card and let them know you wish them well over the holiday season and that you are looking forward to pursuing your career goals with their company in the New Year.
- Talk to your network contacts in your targeted companies and ask them if there are hiring plans coming in early January.
- Consider approaching companies in the retail industry and looking for opportunities in either the head or regional offices during this busy time.
If all else fails, you will know you have made and renewed connections, enjoyed yourself and gave yourself a head start in gaining a few pounds over the holiday season!
Happy Holidays Everyone!
