UBC DAP is pleased to launch a number of new course offerings for Winter Term 1 and 2. The Winter Session schedules for Term 1 and 2 are now available from the Schedules.
The DAP curriculum is continually reviewed to ensure our courses meet the breadth and depth of coverage expected by the accounting industry. From this evaluation process, a number of courses had been identified as areas for revision. As such, you’ll find a number of course curriculum and delivery changes that have been made for the upcoming year:
Flexible Learning Courses
We’re introducing new flexible learning courses to the schedule this year (identified on the schedule as “FLX”). Rather than attending traditional in-class lectures for three hours each week, students in a flexible learning course will spend more time with online learning materials in preparation for fewer scheduled in-person meeting times. The following flexible learning sections will be offered:
- Winter Term 1 – BUSI 293, Sec 105 and BUSI 294, Sec 102 – scheduled classes for each course will meet on alternate Tuesdays, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Robson Square
- Winter Term 2 – BUSI 353, Sec 201 and BUSI 450, Sec 203 – scheduled classes for each course will meet on alternate Tuesdays, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at Robson Square
As the scheduled classes will be held on alternating weeks, you have the flexibility to registering for both courses in the same term, or select just one – it’s up to you! This flexible learning schedule is designed to offer you the option of reducing the number of weeknights you need to commit to attending class, but retaining the structure of a regularly scheduled bi-weekly lecture. For some students, this may mean that you can now take 3 courses in a term, but only need to attend lectures twice a week, while others who choose to take just one of the flexible sections, will only have to attend class six times in the term.
Update to Finance Curriculum
Starting Winter Term 1, our Finance curriculum will be redesigned, with BUSI 370 – Finance and BUSI 470 – Financial Management being merged into a single course, BUSI 370. The revised Finance curriculum is currently under review and is pending approval, but once approved, we expect BUSI 370 will be recognized by CPA to meet their Finance pre-requisite on its own, reducing the time required for DAP students to qualify for CPA PEP. At this time, we are planning for the redesigned BUSI 370 to be offered starting with Winter Term 1 and BUSI 470 will be offered for a final time in Winter Term 1. If you are planning to continue on to the CPA program and have completed BUSI 370 or have been granted an exemption from BUSI 370 as of the end of this Summer Term 2 (August 2018), but have not completed BUSI 470, it strongly recommended that you complete BUSI 470 this Summer Term 2 or in the upcoming Winter Term 1.
New Economics Course
We’re launching BUSI 295 – Managerial Economics, a new economics course which will cover topics in both microeconomics and macroeconomics. This course will be offered online, with supplementary optional review sessions, in both Winter Term 1 and 2. The Winter Term 1 section will be offered initially as a pilot with limited seats available, so if you are interested in taking this course in Winter Term 1, you are encouraged to register early. This course is currently under review to meet CPA’s Economics pre-requisite and upon approval, is expected to be added to the UBC DAP transfer guide for CPA as a recognized course for the Economics topic area.
